A hard surface modeling project I've done at 3D Sense Media School. This is based on the Droideka or Destroyer Droid from the Star Wars universe. Although I've named it as an "Elite" Droideka with a custom paint job & details, it's still pretty much the same design only with a slightly larger blaster cannon diameter to make it feel more threatening (as per the suggestion of my classmate).
I took this from preparation stage (gathering references, sketch studies, putting together orthographic views with images and a small toy droideka), to modeling, texturing (diffuse, bump, specular, displacement and dirt maps), rendering, simple rigging (for posing and hydraulic constraints) and finally to render and compositing.
I look forward to playing with this model more beyond the submission stage and do a more advanced rig, construct a plasma shield shader, animate and make this baby roll (literally ;D). But first, a turntable render...
